I might be continually failed by all the languages (aka The Retreat Review)
I am tempted to just post arseloads of exclamation marks, but since Tif and I have watched it the second time I feel like I should summon a couple of words (preferably ones that aren't 'yes, please.' 'hot' and 'do me') to inform yous about the the overall quality of the movie.
It's not the best movie that you'll ever see, it has a lot of potential and quite a good script, but many shortcomings that could have been easily eradicated had the scriptwriter and director (in one person here) been more experienced, but for a first-timer it's definitely a promising omen (at least it seemed so to me). The cast (J-BELLLLLS) was brilliant and it always makes me all warm and fuzzy inside when reknown actors take part in low-budget productions of first-time/ new directors, they're an innate promotion to it and they pass on some of their experience onto the makers of the movie. Both Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton are very good, though for the latter, I found (and so did Tif) Kate's character quite inconsistent in her development, the transition between a displeased suffering wife, a bawling vulnerable woman and a decisive action-taker is a bit implausible. Bell (we are so fucking biased but whatever) is absolutely mesmerizing in the role, he swerves between purposeful violence, manipulation and raw heartbreaking tenderness, it's impossible to take your eyes off him, there's something so coiled and predatory about him, it's like a glowing embers that turn to a crackling fire, back and forth. The dynamics between them is a fucking wet dream of the d/s variety, it's basically two doms having it off over a sub. Loads of power play . PERSONALLY, I LOVED IT.

The plot might have done better with a bit of refinement but it's still surprisingly rich and engaging (much more than I thought it would be), the music is lovely (very Jane Eyre-ish actually) and THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS BEAUTIFUL, ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. WALES POSING AS SCOTLAND DOES A MAGNIFICENT JOB.
